Ubuntu GNOME Shell Remix 12.04 Released

by jan on 27.04.2012 at 16:32:59

Ubuntu GNOME Shell Remix is now available in a new version based on Ubuntu 12.04. You can download and install it directly from the download page. Please note that upgrades from previous versions are currently not supported. I'm going to try to offer an upgrade possibility and report later on this blog.

Improvements in the new version include the updated GNOME applications that are now available in version 3.4. The display manager is now changed from GDM to LightDM, which makes using the guest session possible and fixes the previous problems with auto-login.

Thanks to the developers from Ubuntu and GNOME for making this software package possible!

I've been looking for an Ubuntu type distribution that was using the Gnome 3 shell; this is a good one. Thanks for a fine distribution.

I just discovered Ubuntu GS Remix thanks to WebUpd8 and I tried it straight away : it is exactly what I was looking for : much faster and lighter than Ubuntu. It's fabulous. Thanks a lot for this excellent work.

L'he descobert mercès a l'estupenda feina duta a terme per WebUpd8. M'agrada molt la simplicitat de Gnome Shell. Thanks a lot for your excellent work. Greetings from Girona, Spain!

I've tried to boot the distribution from an USB stick on two PCs. On both the boot fails with a message "unknown keyboard entry". Any idea?

#11 by joede on 10.05.2012 at 08:52:50
Sorry, the correct message is "unknown keyboard in configuration file".

This is what I have been looking for. Thanks for making it an option for Gnome-shell lovers.
I'm really looking forward with optimism that gnome version of Ubuntu be included to the official release.

I like Gnome Shell. Have been using this remix for a couple of weeks. Works nicely. I find Gnome Shell a very productive. Faster and smoother than Unity.

Great work, some questions:

1. The apps are from Gnome 3.4 but is the basic Gnome version used here 3.4 aswell? Or is it v3.2 which is officially packaged with Ubuntu 12.04 I believe?

2. Will using this remix mean that I get all the updates that Canonical give to normal 12.04? I take it the updates to the "remixed" parts are excluded and are then provided by you or your team? How frequently do you push updates - just curious!

Lastly thanks again - I tried out Fedora 17 and was pleasantly suprised with the direction Gnome 3 is going. Things seemed to "just work" and I felt I could live with it better than Unity.

Hi, the distro works great but the login screen is damned ugly...

How can we just change the login screen ?

#22 by Dave Hunt on 04.08.2012 at 22:13:41
Great job on the distro! I'm blind, and use the Orca screen reader (included, btw) to access the screen with spoken feedback. How do I get the login greeter to use Orca? I find that all other accessibility options seem to be there. For now, using auto login.

Can the size of the ISO be shrunk?
One way I can think of is to include only pure GNOME stuff (Canonical or otherwise) on the install disk ISO, the rest can be got off the Canonical servers as per the users needs using any of the package management tools available with the system.
